Mass Spectrometer for Wellsite Gas Analysis

Product Specifications

The Badger MS is built for continuous mud-gas analysis while drilling. It measures formation gases in real time and outputs a full mass spectrum for each scan. The system runs automatically without carrier gases, records data locally, and streams results to the Zoom-Out platform for live access and review.

Applications

  1. Geological and geochemical exploration

  2. Conventional and unconventional resource evaluation

  3. Mud In / Mud Out gas comparison for formation characterization

  4. Identification of gas shows, seals, and fluid contacts

  5. Real-time hydrocarbon ratio tracking and isotopic trends

  6. Pressure and flow correlation with gas release behavior

  7. Helium and hydrogen detection in exploration drilling

  8. Geothermal and georesource mapping

Capabilities

  1. Heated ion source for stable long-term operation

  2. Modular ion source and electron multiplier for quick field replacement

  3. Dual sample path for alternating Mud In and Mud Out analysis

  4. Full 2–180 amu scan range in one cycle

  5. Adjustable scan interval (1–30 s per scan)

  6. Outputs per scan in counts, ppm, and partial pressure (CSV format)

  7. Wide dynamic range up to 5 × 10⁸ counts

  8. Automatic calibration using onboard reference gas

  9. Remote operation and monitoring through Zoom-Out

Data Acquisition Unit

The DAcqUnit is a compact, all-in-one data acquisition device for measuring voltage, current, counters, and other sensor outputs. It communicates over Ethernet or serial using WITS0 and WITSML formats and includes onboard processing with isolated power outputs to prevent interference and faults. Additional units can be linked to increase input capacity.

System Benefits

Specifications

By combining signal collection and transmission in one unit, the DAcqUnit simplifies field installations and reduces hardware requirements. It supports diverse input types and protocols, maintains stable, accurate readings through input isolation and filtering, and integrates easily into existing data workflows.

  • The DAcqUnit includes four counter inputs and one quadrature input, all supporting NAMUR or switch protocols. It also provides eight analog inputs compatible with NAMUR, 4–20 mA, 10 V, or 5 V signals.

  • The DAcqUnit provides multiple communication options, including a Serial 1 port for WITS0 input or output and a Serial 2 port dedicated to configuration. Ethernet connectivity supports TCP output using WITS0 or WITSML formats, along with an HTML interface for configuration and live data viewing.

  • The DAcqUnit base module measures approximately 6 × 4 × 8 inches and supports both 110 V and 220 V power input.
